OUR STANDARDS
What it actually is
Synthetic bristles skate over the skin and flatten within weeks. Natural bristle has enough give to sweep without scratching and enough structure to still be doing the job in six months. The handle is contoured so you can reach the backs of your legs and the base of your back without a strap.
Head
Natural bristle, firm enough to sweep and give enough not to scratch.
Handle
Contoured, so the backs of the legs and the base of the back are reachable without a strap.
Use
Dry skin only, before the shower.
Replace
When the bristles no longer spring back — natural bristle typically outlasts a synthetic head several times over.
ONE RULE: ALWAYS TOWARD THE HEART
The six-step morning sweep
Two minutes, in this order, every stroke travelling toward the heart. Do it in front of a mirror the first few times so you can see the direction you are actually going in.
-
1 Dry skin, before the shower Dry, never damp
The bristles need something to grip. Brush before you get in, not after, and never on skin that is still damp from yesterday's moisturiser. If it feels like it is skating, the skin is wet.
-
2 Ankles first, work upward Ankle to knee, knee to hip
Long sweeps up the shin, then the calf, then the thigh. Five to seven strokes over each area, then move on. Always upward — toward the heart, never back down.
-
3 Arms, wrists inward Hand to elbow, elbow to shoulder
Back of the hand up the forearm to the elbow, then elbow to shoulder. Same direction rule: everything travels in toward the middle of you.
-
4 Back and buttocks Upward, as far as you can reach
Long upward sweeps from the base of the back. The contoured handle gets you there without a strap; whatever you cannot reach, skip rather than twist for.
-
5 Stomach and chest, lighter Circles on the stomach, in toward the armpit on the chest
Ease off the pressure here. Slow circles over the stomach, and on the chest sweep in toward the armpit rather than away from it. Go around breast tissue, not over it.
-
6 Then shower Warm rinse, pat dry
Rinse off what you have lifted, pat dry rather than rub, and moisturise while the skin is still slightly damp. Two minutes of brushing is the whole job — longer is not better.
The catch nobody mentions: this only shifts what is already sitting there. Your lymphatic system is the one circulatory system with no pump — sit still all day and it slows regardless of how well you brush. That is the half the drops do.
When, and how often
How often
Two or three mornings a week for the first fortnight, then daily once the skin has settled to it. Daily is the ceiling, not a target.
When
Before the morning shower. It is a wake-up step, not a wind-down one — most people find it too stimulating last thing at night.
How long
Two minutes, end to end. If you are going past five you are pressing for an effect that pressure does not produce.
When not to
Skip broken skin, sunburn, eczema flares, varicose veins and anything inflamed. Brush around them, not over them. Pregnant, or managing a skin condition? Ask your GP first.
Keeping it clean
After every use
Tap the head against the side of the bath to knock out the loose skin, and leave it somewhere dry and airy — not face-down on a wet shelf.
Every fortnight
Swirl the bristles in warm water with a little mild soap. Do not soak the whole brush; the wooden head and the glue behind the bristles do not want to sit in water.
Drying
Shake it out and dry it bristles-down, away from a radiator or direct heat. Heat is what warps the head and loosens the bristles.
Never
Never store it damp, never put it in a dishwasher, and never share it — a body brush is a personal item.
The first fortnight
Most people who give up on dry brushing give up in the first week, because nobody told them what week one is supposed to feel like.
DAYS 1–3
The skin pinks up for a few minutes afterwards and settles. That is circulation, not irritation. If it stings, or the marks are still there an hour later, you are pressing far too hard.
WEEK 1
The bristles soften against your skin. What felt firm on day one starts to feel moderate, and the two minutes stop feeling like a chore.
WEEK 2
Texture is the first thing most people notice — legs that feel smoother than they look. The heavy-legged-by-evening feeling is the slower one to shift.
AFTER THAT
It becomes the thing you do while the shower warms up. That is the point at which it starts compounding.

THE OTHER HALF OF THE RITUAL
That is not fat. That is fluid.
The waistband that digs in by 6pm. Rings that will not come off. Flat in the morning, bloated by the evening. You can diet all you like — it will not shift fluid. Nine botanicals plus a source of Vitamin C, one dropper twice a day.
Brushing works on what has already pooled, from the outside in. The drops are the part that runs all day while you are sitting at a desk — which is where the problem starts. Doing one without the other is doing half of it.

Questions
How often should I use it?
Two or three mornings a week to start, then daily once the skin is used to it. Two minutes is enough — longer is not better, and pressing harder is not better either.
Which direction do I brush?
Always toward the heart. Up the legs from the ankles, in along the arms from the hands, and in toward the armpit across the chest. There are no exceptions to this and it is the single thing people get wrong.
Will it scratch?
It should feel firm, not sharp. If it stings you are pressing too hard, or the skin is damp. Natural bristle softens noticeably over the first fortnight.
Can I use it in the shower?
No — it is a dry brush, and the bristles need dry skin to sweep properly. Brush first, then shower.
How do I clean it?
Tap out the loose skin after every use, and every couple of weeks swirl the bristles in warm soapy water. Dry it bristles-down, away from direct heat, and never put it away damp.
Do I need the drops as well?
No, but brushing only moves what is already pooled. The drops are the daily inside half, and most people who stick with the ritual end up doing both.
